What is MBTI?
The Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI) is a personality preference instrument developed by mother-daughter team Katherine Briggs and Isabel Briggs-Myers based on theory by Carl Jung.
They began creating the indicator during World War II, believing that a knowledge of personality preferences would help women who were entering the industrial workforce for the first time to identify the war-time jobs in which they would be most comfortable and effective. The initial questionnaire grew into the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator.
Through their work, Katherine and Isabel identified four personality preference scales, or, dichotomies, and sixteen distinct personality types. No one type is better or worse than any other; however, Katherine and Isabel theorized that individuals naturally prefer one overall combination of type differences. In the same way that writing with the left hand is unnatural for a right-hander, people tend to find using their opposite psychological preferences more difficult. Identifying your personality type is part of discovering who you are. Understanding your type will help you to realize your natural strengths and inclinations, as well as, weaknesses. Isabel believed "Whatever the circumstances of your life, the understanding of type can make your perceptions clearer, your judgments sounder, and your life closer to your heart's desire." Thus, personality type has become a common thread in determining career interest and satisfaction.
